[10:09] Janice Binder: Are we supposed to be trying iVocalize for this meeting?
[10:09] You: How have you been doing in SEcond LIfe so far?
[10:10] You: Any thoughts, experiences? Questions?
[10:10] SteveGilbertSir Heron: http://tltgroup1.ivocalize.net/ TLTG35 is password today in iVocalize - case sensitive
[10:10] Ida Recreant: I'm doing okay, but I'd sure like to be more comfortable.
[10:10] Econ Bingyi is Online

[10:10] Sher Kohnke: I need to get better clothes.
[10:10] Computer Jewell: Need to practice more
[10:11] SteveGilbertSir Heron: Ida Recreant - how do you get your avatar to do that leaning back? I s very much the kind of thing I need to do in Real Life after I sit for 20-30 minutes!
[10:11] Nea Munro is Online
[10:11] Stella Merlin: I need to learn how to change clothes more quickly for meetings! I was out shopping for freebies last night and this is the result! LOL!
[10:11] You: Ah... shopping!
[10:11] Joe Cupola: the learning really starts with shopping!
[10:11] Computer Jewell: Freebies - that is what I like!!!
[10:11] Sharron Jewell: I am also having trouble with my hair...looks like two big curls coming out of my head!
[10:12] You: If you are sitting on a bench , it's going to be programmed to have your avatar do certain things like lean back.
[10:12] Joe Cupola: Stella, more of that will come with experience. just have to use it more until you get used to it.
[10:12] SteveGilbertSir Heron: Why are some people listed as "Member ...." while others are not? Sharron Jewell, Sher Kohnke are not listed as "Member"
[10:12] GemTwin Oh: As an instructor, can I add exam notes etc. for my students to buy?
[10:12] Joe Cupola: some people may not have their tlt group activated steve.
[10:12] Stella Merlin: Okay, thanks Joe. But I understand that it can be done by outfit in one click, instead of by individual piece with several clicks.
[10:12] Janice Binder: I cannot get on iVocalize either.
[10:13] Sharron Jewell: I am in ivocalize but still don't have member by my name
[10:13] SteveGilbertSir Heron: We're using a verison of iVocalize new as of last week. We are NOT thrilled with the tranisition. We REALLY want ot know what troupble you encounter. Thanks

[10:13] Stella Merlin: Thanks Joe -- you're my new fashion consultant!
[10:13] SteveGilbertSir Heron: I have no idea how i got the clothes I have, nor do i mind.
[10:14] GemTwin Oh: Are there any free spaces to go to to see examples of educational setting? A classroom, with a powerpoint slides, etc.?
[10:14] Joe Cupola: but it will only put on you the items you have in that folder. so if you don't have your hair in that folder, you won't have hair on when you replace

[10:15] GemTwin Oh: Can you run a poll or survey as the leader in this space?
[10:15] Joe Cupola: to use the auditoriums you do have to reserve them.
[10:16] You: You can stream music and sudio
[10:16] Stella Merlin: How do you find out who owns the space so that you can reserve it?
[10:16] Joe Cupola: right click on it
[10:16] GemTwin Oh: Can we find out more about that gadget?
[10:16] You: There are educational gadgets that people have that will allow you do to polls and surveys in SL
[10:17] Cathleen Munro: how would you set up to stream video?
[10:17] Joe Cupola: right click on an item select edit then more then object it will list the owner and creator
[10:17] GemTwin Oh: Are there gadgets for gradebook, usage statistics?
[10:17] SteveGilbertSir Heron: How do I become a "member" of TLT?

[10:18] SteveGilbertSir Heron: Do you touch me on the shoulder with a sword?
[10:18] Joe Cupola: GemTwin, there are undoubtedly gadgets for just about anything you can come up with. look thru the sl blogs, search here in sl, and do google searches for them
[10:18] Percival's Short Bench: Right click me and choose 'Sit Here' to sit down
[10:18] SteveGilbertSir Heron: Nea Munro, how did you become an "Educator" instead of a "member"?
[10:19] Sharron Jewell: afk
[10:19] SteveGilbertSir Heron: I feel much more engaged now that I'm a "member"
[10:19] You: Gadgets... The ICT Library is a good place to look. I'll get you directions for how to get there .
[10:20] Nea Munro: I joined the real educators group in TLT and am sest as a member of that group.
[10:20] SteveGilbertSir Heron: How much of this sort of exploration, tutorial, etc. woudl each student need to do in prep for particpiating in a SL educ activity?
[10:20] SteveGilbertSir Heron: Nea, how did you do that?
[10:21] Stella Merlin: Has anyone created a document with the names of the gadgerts and links to examples of how they're being used for education in SL?
[10:21] SteveGilbertSir Heron: [Is "Nea" an acronym National Educational Assoc.?
[10:21] Nea Munro: I cllicked on my Avator, selected Groups, found the Real Educator Group and joined.
[10:21] Joe Cupola: this is the powerpoint viewer I created last nite
[10:21] Joe Cupola: it may take a moment to rez
[10:21] Dewey Jung is Online
[10:22] Nea Munro: No Nea is my nickname as a child, but it certailny is appropriate.
[10:22] GemTwin Oh: Jane's getting a good look at the powerpoint.
[10:22] You: We went to Google and typed in PowerPoint upload "Second Life" - and we found info at an OReilly site that expalined how to do this.
[10:22] Stella Merlin: Jane's got some real star power up there!
[10:23] Jane Watanabe: i guess I am blind my monitor is tinee and I need a close up look. Sorry for being so bold.
[10:23] Stella Merlin: No worries, Jane. Do you know how to use the ALT key for close ups?
[10:24] Jane Watanabe: no. how do I do that?
[10:24] Percival's Short Bench: Right click me and choose 'Sit Here' to sit down
[10:24] Stella Merlin: From far away from any object, press your ALT key and hold it, then use your mouse to click on the object you want to view and scroll to a close up
[10:24] You: This cost a few Linden dollars to do this- It's $10 Linden dollars to upload them into Secnd Life.
[10:24] You: Stella - good tip!! Thanks!
[10:25] Stella Merlin: Sure -- it's fun for getting close ups of cool looking avatars without being obtrusive, too!
[10:25] Joe Cupola: so you could easily make up a presentation for you class and do it here.
[10:25] You: It can take some time to rezz each image as Joe mentioned.
[10:25] Joe Cupola: yes it's slow on my laptop.
[10:25] Regent Gazov: has anyone here actually used sl in a class setting?
[10:25] Janice Binder: Ilene, I'm afraid I'm missing something. Are we supposed to be hearing audio?
[10:25] You: As a teacher in SL, you'd want to go pretty slow and make sure your audience was with you.
[10:25] GemTwin Oh: Is there a way to turn off the identity bubbles?
[10:26] Jane Watanabe: hey hat's great.
[10:26] SteveGilbertSir Heron: Most of us are hearing the audio via iVocalize
[10:26] Stella Merlin: The Pp looks great, Joe. Is it the same system for streaming video?
[10:26] Janice Binder: I tried logging into iVocalize (never had trouble before) and cannot seem to get there.
[10:26] Percival's Short Bench: Right click me and choose 'Sit Here' to sit down
[10:27] You: Turning off the bubbles over people's heads... Go to EDIT --> Preferences --> General and then...
[10:28] You: you can show names either always never or temporarily - and then click OK
[10:28] Percival's Short Bench: Right click me and choose 'Sit Here' to sit down
[10:28] You: You can change that setting whenever you want to.
[10:28] Stella Merlin: Did the ALT button trick work for you, jane?
[10:28] Janice Binder: Ahhhh, doesn't like parentheses.
[10:28] Jane Watanabe: yes thanks for showing that to me
[10:28] Stella Merlin: Happy to!
[10:29] Stella Merlin: So, Joe about the PP presentation -- is it the same technology you use for video streaming or not?
[10:29] Percival's Short Bench: Right click me and choose 'Sit Here' to sit down
[10:29] Percival's Short Bench: Right click me and choose 'Sit Here' to sit down
[10:29] Ariadne Yiyuan is Online
[10:29] Joe Cupola: No it's not streaming video is very complex...way beyond my capabliites. this pp was the equivalent of uploading pictures very simple
[10:30] Cathleen Munro: how do you join a group after you find it on the list? do you have to be invited?
[10:30] Stella Merlin: Ok , thanks.
[10:30] SteveGilbertSir Heron: How much of this kind of exploration, tutorials would be advisable for students as prep for educ use of SL?
[10:30] Joe Cupola: you'd have to explore the blogs for info about how to stream video there's lots of info out therer
[10:30] Stella Merlin: Streaming video is used also for machinima, right???
[10:30] Jane Watanabe: what do you mean Steve?
[10:30] You: Some groups will let you join at will - and sometimes you get to ask permission to be a member.
[10:31] GemTwin Oh: Is the TLT Group considering setting up an educational space (classroom) that we could all share in SL?
[10:31] You: Machinima usually is just making a movie of what's happening on the screen.
[10:31] Joe Cupola: Thats a good question maybe steve could answer that?
[10:31] Ida Recreant: Can anyone change the slides by touching the screen?
[10:31] Joe Cupola: yes ida anyone can
[10:31] Joe Cupola: so in a class you might have a slide that says "don't touch the slides"
[10:31] Stella Merlin: Machinima -- but there's a lot of editing involved in the best ones. It must be saved off SL and then edited, I should think?
[10:31] Ida Recreant: Joe, that doesn't work if you're showing it to students.
[10:32] Econ Bingyi: Yes it seems to work.
[10:32] Joe Cupola: well, you could put it behindglass
[10:32] Jane Watanabe: is anyone making machinima forlibrary instruction?
[10:32] Ida Recreant: Okay, thanks Joe, that answers my question.
[10:32] Stella Merlin: Jane -- that interests me, too. I'm an academic librarian and I'm hoping to find a machinima for showing the LOC system and finding books.
[10:33] Jane Watanabe: great idea.
[10:33] GemTwin Oh: Could you then post that somewhere so that your students could go back and view the session?
[10:33] Ida Recreant: Stella, interesting idea for the library; our library is thinking of that for special collections--a lot of work, though.
[10:33] Joe Cupola: yes you could
[10:33] Stella Merlin: Ida -- have you viewed some of the machinima in YouTube?
[10:33] Joe Cupola: as long as you owned a space to leave it.
[10:34] Jane Watanabe: i' d like to use avatars looking like entering aged students to orient them to academic collections
[10:34] Ida Recreant: STella, I've seen a few things; not library tours, though.
[10:34] Stella Merlin: Jane - yes! Ida, me neither. But I'm convinced it's out there!
[10:34] Ariadne Yiyuan: Hi. Ilene. Ignore my message. I'm here. No audio.
[10:34] Jane Watanabe: add on the sound of them discussing
[10:34] Ida Recreant: Jane, that's an interesting idea, too.
[10:35] Stella Merlin: A librarian in Australia is already doing Information Literacy teaching in SL... I"m trying to find her name now...
[10:35] You: Machinima: You can create movies of what's happening in Second Life, but clicking "FILE" and the "stop/start movie to disk"
[10:35] Jane Watanabe: much more intersting that librarians... peers avatars talking to peers
[10:35] You: Just remember not to save the file on your desktop.
[10:35] Stella Merlin: Why Ilene?
[10:35] Joe Cupola: those files are pretty big though so make sure you have the machine power to handle them and don't save them on your desktop
[10:35] Stella Merlin: Ah!
[10:35] GemTwin Oh: Is someone trying to edit the wall. The wall is flashing and changing.
[10:36] Stella Merlin: There's a good document in Second Opinion -- Ten tips on Creating Machinima in Second Life
[10:36] Ida Recreant: Thanks Stella; that will be helpful.
[10:36] Jane Watanabe: where does the movie go?

[10:37] Stella Merlin: I keep seeing them in You Tube and on websites, but I imagine you could stream them into SL, couldn't you?

[10:37] Joe Cupola: students tend to be more engaged in the actual coursework
[10:38] You: Stella, yes, you can stream movies- various types of files - into Second LIfe
[10:38] Ida Recreant: What kind of coursework? What kinds of things do you ask students to do?
[10:38] Jane Watanabe: how can I edit the location of the movie?
[10:39] Joe Cupola: Jane, you'd edit it just like you would the location of a word file
[10:39] Stella Merlin: After a machinima, could you do a second interactive tutorial with the student's avatar required to look up a specific book in the catalog and find it in the virtual campus library?
[10:39] Joe Cupola: I'm convinced that anything you can come up with, you could do here.
[10:39] Joe Cupola: now whether or not you'd find a gadget to do it or record it is another story.
[10:40] Ariadne Yiyuan: I missed part of this. Is this powerpoint?
[10:40] Joe Cupola: it depends on how skillful you become in scripting and building things or in searching out places where people have already built them.
[10:40] Klaatu Niu is Offline
[10:40] Desideria Stockton is Online
[10:40] Joe Cupola: yes adiadne it is powerpoint

[10:41] Stella Merlin: Help me -- I'm ripping through my files in RL, but I can't find the name of that Austrialian university librarian who's doing the "Steps to Information Literacy in SL". Does anyone know about it?
[10:41] Stella Merlin: Queensland University, I think?
[10:41] Percival's Short Bench: Right click me and choose 'Sit Here' to sit down
[10:41] Jane Watanabe: Joe Cupola: Jane, you'd edit it just like you would the location of a word file --- it does not give me the option... just start /stopmovie. I've done that but now have no idea where ist went or how to control where th next ones goes.
[10:42] Ida Recreant: Ilene, thanks, that's very helpful.
[10:42] You: Jane, I'd have to look again too - but there is a way to make an SLMovie save to a certain place ;)
[10:43] Draconius Merlin is Online
[10:43] Ariadne Yiyuan: I have powerpoints I would like to try. Where can we go to play with this? Can you use any screen?

[10:47] Klaatu Niu is Online
[10:47] Ariadne Yiyuan: Could we do a practice seesion in the audio version?
[10:47] You: Desideria, can you tell us a little about your courses you teach on SL?
[10:48] Ida Recreant: Good idea, Ariadne
[10:48] Klaatu Niu is Offline
[10:48] GemTwin Oh: It would be great if we could all get into an actual class to see how it is used for an online class.
[10:48] Desideria Stockton: Right now, I am teaching several courses in Second Life
[10:48] Ariadne Yiyuan: I want all the details. This is exactly what I want to do.
[10:48] Klaatu Niu is Online
[10:49] Desideria Stockton: The classrooms are listed on http://collegeenglish.wikispaces.com/literaturealive
[10:49] Desideria Stockton: these are completely open access
[10:49] Desideria Stockton: that means that you can use them or I can pass you the materials for you to build your own
[10:49] Econ Bingyi: Are there some business courses?
[10:49] Desideria Stockton: right now I teach American Literature, British Literature, and Contemporary Fiction in SL
[10:49] Diane42b Vollmar: i'd like to attend one of Desi's classes if I may.
[10:50] Desideria Stockton: you are all welcome to atttend all of the classes
[10:50] Desideria Stockton: and participate as a student or as an academic mentor
[10:50] Computer Jewell: I would also like to attend your classes
[10:50] Janice Binder: Desideria, can you send us a schedule that would be convenient for you?
[10:50] Desideria Stockton: the first contemp fiction will start tomorrow night
[10:50] Desideria Stockton: sure, I will send out a schedule
[10:50] Jane Watanabe: thanks Desideria!
[10:50] Ava Pugilist: Ida I am
[10:50] Diane42b Vollmar: that would be great
[10:50] Desideria Stockton: contemp fiction is the one that is completely immersed
[10:51] You: Great! This group's eager to see a class in action!
[10:51] Ava Pugilist: working at home with a cold
[10:51] Desideria Stockton: it is focusing on Gloria Naylor
[10:51] Desideria Stockton: and we have three builds for students to use
[10:51] Ariadne Yiyuan: Thanks. This is my field--perfect.
[10:51] Desideria Stockton: Willow Springs from Mama Day
[10:51] Desideria Stockton: Bailey's Cafe and Brewster Place
[10:51] Diane42b Vollmar: I just read Gloria's "The Women of Brewster's Place"
[10:51] Desideria Stockton: Even if you dont teach literature, you might want to just stop in and see how information is presented
[10:51] Desideria Stockton: i am not a builder or a scripter
[10:51] Liatris Tidewater is Online
[10:52] Desideria Stockton: so, you will see how I work around that using existing tools in SL
[10:52] Ariadne Yiyuan: Perfect.
[10:52] Stella Merlin: Desideria, how did you get the skills to design and use a teaching
[10:57] Desideria Stockton: it is a lot easier to get rid of them here than in RL
[10:57] Desideria Stockton: Basically, my advice is this
[10:57] SteveGilbertSir Heron: Ilene, Joe - Desiderata, - any official last words before we move into "afterthoughts" time?
[10:57] Hot Cocoa Latte whispers: Hmm, hot cocoa..
[10:57] Stella Merlin: How about the students skills in SL -- did they all learn enough about SL to allow them to learn the main course content?
[10:57] Desideria Stockton: Always remember that content comes first
[10:57] Desideria Stockton: yes, I always focus on content

[10:58] Desideria Stockton: so, I dont require students to learn much building and they aren't graded on building
[10:58] Janice Binder: Desideria, do you find your students get distracted?
[10:58] Hypatia Dejavu is Offline
[10:58] Stella Merlin: What might they need to build?
[10:58] GemTwin Oh: I hope someone will review the chat. Lots of comments and questions unanswered during this session.
[10:58] Desideria Stockton: not really, Janice
[10:58] Desideria Stockton: if I am missing your questionm, please type it again :-)
[10:58] Desideria Stockton: Students stay focused
[10:59] Jane Watanabe: some faculty here at my institution are concerned about ethics of brining young students into SL
[10:59] Stella Merlin: Desideria -- what might your students need to build?
[10:59] SteveGilbertSir Heron: Desideria, do your students express any surprise at your chosen appearance within SL?
[10:59] Percival's Short Bench: Right click me and choose 'Sit Here' to sit down
[10:59] Desideria Stockton: My appearance comes from gender discourse studies on Barbie
[10:59] Desideria Stockton: students only need to "rez" objects
[10:59] Desideria Stockton: so, they dont really need to build
[10:59] You: There are a lot of very Barbie like avatars ;)
[10:59] Desideria Stockton: and, ehtics is very important to me
[10:59] Stella Merlin: Sorry -- "rez" objects?
[10:59] Desideria Stockton: this is not the grid for young students
[11:00] Desideria Stockton: rez means place them down
[11:00] Jane Watanabe: young meaning intheir early 20s.
[11:00] Stella Merlin: Right -- thanks1
[11:00] SteveGilbertSir Heron: What's the implications of the Barbie-like avatars?
[11:00] Desideria Stockton: so they are made by me or bought and then just drag them to the grounf
[11:00] Desideria Stockton: well, even in their 20s, they are adults
[11:00] Computer Jewell: Thank you
[11:00] Joe Cupola: there is a separate grid for teens under 18
[11:00] Jane Watanabe: sex and gambling concerns
[11:00] Jane Watanabe: what's rez?
[11:00] Desideria Stockton: and just like in Real Life, you can model good and ethical behavious and give them good content
[11:00] Desideria Stockton: but in their free time, they have to make choices
[11:00] Jane Watanabe: i agree. what do you tell concerned faculty

[11:00] You: "rez' is making something because visible
[11:01] Xena Meriman gave you Red Rose.
[11:01] Desideria Stockton: yes, those things do exist, but they are aults
[11:01] Desideria Stockton: adults
[11:01] Desideria Stockton: it is like RL this way
[11:01] Desideria Stockton: really and truly, the students kind of stick to you in the start
[11:01] Desideria Stockton: what they do on their time is their business
[11:01] Desideria Stockton: in RL I dont ask
[11:01] Klaatu Niu is Offline
[11:01] Desideria Stockton: so, in here I dont ask
[11:01] You: I think you have to warn students that they might enounter some odd behavior - but I know I've been on a lot and haven't seen much bad behavior!
[11:02] Desideria Stockton: during my class, they are directed to edifying content
[11:02] Stella Merlin: Desi -- I wonder if it's not actually "tighter" than RL, the way students stick to you in the beginning?
[11:02] Desideria Stockton: yes, stell, in many ways they are closer knit in here
[11:02] Diane42b Vollmar: I'd like to know what's the implication of the Barbie-like appearance?
[11:02] Jane Watanabe: i've just gotten a lot of grief from one ro two very vocal alarmists.
[11:02] Desideria Stockton: I did a 30 day research study on gender discourse in SL
[11:02] Stella Merlin: Are your students geographically dispersed?
[11:02] Joe Cupola: implications for what Diane
[11:02] Desideria Stockton: my online students are dispersed, but my F2F students are not
[11:03] Stella Merlin: Do you know if your F2f students meet in RL?
[11:03] Desideria Stockton: I dont look anything like this in RL
[11:03] Stella Merlin: Socially, I mean? Is there any additional sense of community?
[11:03] Desideria Stockton: for my online classes, they do not meet in real life
[11:03] Desideria Stockton: my F2F students are in a lab
[11:03] Ida Recreant: Thanks for everything!
[11:03] JohnJAYARflipper Schumann: I think I finally made it to the right auditorium!
[11:04] Diane42b Vollmar: Thanks everyone...i have to go.
[11:04] Joe Cupola: There is definitely an additional sense of community here.
[11:04] Stella Merlin: I suppose I'm hoping that SL creates RL social bonds. Any sign of that?
[11:04] SteveGilbertSir Heron: I find it worrisome that SL has adopted an approach that makes it harder to identify yourself by your own name and appearance
[11:04] Desideria Stockton: Yes, they do email and Skyupe
[11:04] Desideria Stockton: but I dont know that they meet
[11:04] In Kenzo is Online
[11:04] Joe Cupola: it can stella...just like chat boards and email can
[11:04] Desideria Stockton: Whyt does that worry you Steve?
[11:04] Jane Watanabe: we need to go public and encourage other educators to go public with their SL names n their profiles
[11:05] SteveGilbertSir Heron: It's not been structured neutrally, but rather slanted toward not using one's own name
[11:05] Jane Watanabe: exactly
[11:05] Ariadne Yiyuan: I think if we could just see one of your cklasses a lot of these questions would be answered.
[11:05] Desideria Stockton: Really, I have found that students are pretty open
[11:05] Desideria Stockton: they accidently call me Beth
[11:05] You: I think "not your own name" gives more scope to fantasy and play in a good way.
[11:05] Desideria Stockton: or Professor Ritter-Guth
[11:05] Janice Binder: Desideria, what time is your class (Eastern) tomorrow night?
[11:05] Computer Jewell is Offline
[11:05] You: But I always tell people who I am if they ask .
[11:05] Desideria Stockton: we will be inworld at 9:30 EST
[11:06] SteveGilbertSir Heron: I would have preferred the option of choosing some situations where we would use our own names and "identities" and others optional and others anonymous or disguised
[11:06] Desideria Stockton: also, if you want to get announcements for the class
[11:06] Janice Binder: What location?
[11:06] Desideria Stockton: join the group "Desi's Virtual World"
[11:06] Desideria Stockton: let me toss out a LM
[11:06] You: Steve, some profs go to great lengths to make their avatars look like themselves. It can be done!
[11:06] You: And you can have mor ethan one avatar
[11:07] Desideria Stockton: Bailey's Cafe and Brewster Place, Quiricosta (219, 40, 503)
[11:07] Jane Watanabe: i look like me... just better hair
[11:07] You: One for work and one for play ;)
[11:07] Desideria Stockton: you can, but I dont
[11:07] Desideria Stockton: I dont have two Beths in real life
[11:07] Desideria Stockton: so, I opt not to have two Desi's in here
[11:07] Desideria Stockton: but some choose to do that, and that is good too
[11:08] Joe Cupola: part of the "fun" about being in 2L is the ability you have to assume a new identity.
[11:08] Joe Cupola: that's part of it's appeal to students too I think
[11:08] SteveGilbertSir Heron: Thanks for helping us Desideria, Joe, Ilene. I'll look for you again in SL - and in 1L!
[11:08] Joe Cupola: thanks steve.
[11:08] Jane Watanabe: is that9:30 am or pm?
[11:08] Desideria Stockton: PM
[11:08] Desideria Stockton: it is an evening class and these are adult learners
[11:08] You: Steve before you go... Someone asked if TLT GROUP was going to have an SL place they could visit
[11:09] Desideria Stockton: at DeSales University in PA
[11:09] Desideria Stockton: I am FT at Lehigh Carbon CC in PA
[11:09] Desideria Stockton: and a member of TLT
[11:09] Desideria Stockton: If you go onto the wiki for literature alive
[11:10] Desideria Stockton: you can visit the builds for literature
[11:10] Joe Cupola: yes steve are you going to make the plunge?
[11:10] Desideria Stockton: at present, we are the only literature group here teaching college level countent
[11:10] Joe Cupola: I understand someone has offered space.
[11:10] Takver Twin is Online
[11:10] Desideria Stockton: If any of you need help here, please feel free to im me
[11:10] Desideria Stockton: sometimes it just helps to see different builds
[11:10] learner Bailey: how do we become members of tlt?
[11:10] Desideria Stockton: to see what you might like to belong
[11:11] Desideria Stockton: TLT mailing list, sorry, I should have clarified
[11:11] Desideria Stockton: there are immersive classrooms
[11:11] learner Bailey: ok, thanks
[11:11] Desideria Stockton: but one critique that is fair to say is that a lot of people build here what they have in real life
[11:11] Desideria Stockton: so, I like to help faculty think beyond that
[11:12] Desideria Stockton: and maintain Creative Commons licensing
[11:12] Stella Merlin: How?

[11:12] Desideria Stockton: well, for example
[11:12] Jane Watanabe: cc! yes
[11:12] Desideria Stockton: The Edgar Allan Poe house is completely immersive
[11:12] Desideria Stockton: it is the House of Usher with artifacts from 12 stories and poems
[11:12] Desideria Stockton: students have to read them and then go find them
[11:12] Desideria Stockton: and then report to me
[11:12] Stella Merlin: Do you find this enhances learning?
[11:13] Stella Merlin: More than in RL traditional lecture?
[11:13] Desideria Stockton: yes, in the case of Poe, students really dove into the literature
[11:13] Desideria Stockton: they had to to find the objects
[11:13] Joe Cupola: I seems that anything that would get your students more engaged would help enhanced learning.
[11:13] Desideria Stockton: but, they seemed to appreciate it more than just reading and discussing it
[11:13] Desideria Stockton: the other thing is that they can go back
[11:13] Jane Watanabe is Offline
[11:14] Desideria Stockton: a lot of them went back afterwards and read the stories again to prepare for the exam
[11:14] Desideria Stockton: and they tested themselves
[11:14] Desideria Stockton: with the house and the objects
[11:14] Desideria Stockton: I cant do that in WebCT
[11:14] Stella Merlin: Ah! and how did that excercise prepare them for the exam?
[11:14] Desideria Stockton: or even in a F2F class
[11:14] Desideria Stockton: well, the exam was on symbols
[11:14] Stella Merlin: Very good!
[11:15] Desideria Stockton: so, that assignment helped them learn to identify symbols
[11:15] Desideria Stockton: and to pick them out from a list of other symbols
[11:15] Desideria Stockton: and we discussed why some symbols are more obvious and important to the overall story
[11:15] Stella Merlin: Fascinating. And how about the context of those SL symbols?

[11:15] Desideria Stockton: right, we discuissed context as a class
[11:15] Econ Bingyi is Offline
[11:15] Desideria Stockton: and their reaction papers dealt with context
[11:16] Stella Merlin: Brilliant!
[11:16] JohnJAYARflipper Schumann: Has anyone integrated SL exercises within a CMS setting - WebCT or ECollege ?
[11:16] Desideria Stockton: in that example, the reactions papers and the exam were the assessed components
[11:16] Desideria Stockton: the use of the house was added value, but not graded
[11:16] Desideria Stockton: I use WebCT
[11:16] Desideria Stockton: for that course
[11:16] Nea Munro: I am interested in roleplaying. Do you do any of this?
[11:16] Stella Merlin: What about SLoodle?
[11:16] Desideria Stockton: yes, for the Chaucer virtual pilgrimage
[11:16] Desideria Stockton: students had to be a character from the Tales
[11:17] Desideria Stockton: and go to 12 stations in character and respond to the prompts
[11:17] JohnJAYARflipper Schumann: fantastic
[11:17] Desideria Stockton: at the end we had to guess who was who
[11:17] Stella Merlin: Prompts? What kind?
[11:17] Desideria Stockton: and prozes were awarded
[11:17] Nea Munro: Fascinating.
[11:17] Desideria Stockton: for example here is one "In character, how do you feel about the state of religion in 2007"
[11:17] Nea Munro: Could I experience this somehow?

[11:17] Desideria Stockton: sure, let me pass you the landmark
[11:18] Desideria Stockton: there are 12 stations
[11:18] Stella Merlin: Prompt: excellent for deep thinking and processing
[11:18] Desideria Stockton: Mayfair, 249, 251, 21
[11:18] Xena Meriman: you don't melt
[11:18] Desideria Stockton: the biggest problem for me
[11:18] Desideria Stockton: has been land
[11:18] Desideria Stockton: I do not receive funding from LCCC
[11:19] Desideria Stockton: so i pay for all of this myself
[11:19] RoBoh Ling: the flaming wings is with us at CSUF and is trying tomelt the snowman
[11:19] Desideria Stockton: and i have run out of room
[11:19] Desideria Stockton: all of my classrooms are spread out
[11:19] PepperK Huet: sorry, won't work
[11:19] Desideria Stockton: on donated land
[11:19] Janice Binder: Who is that snowman?
[11:19] You: Anyone know the snowman?
[11:19] Percival's Short Bench: Right click me and choose 'Sit Here' to sit down
[11:20] Stella Merlin: Oh no! The snowman and the dragon are battling it out!
[11:20] Xena Meriman: fight!
[11:20] Joe Cupola: and on that note...it may be time to close.
[11:20] Ariadne Yiyuan: How much would you say you spend to build a class?
[11:20] Joe Cupola: lol
[11:20] Stella Merlin: It's a mid-air collision of astronomic proportions!
[11:21] Janice Binder: OK, that took care of the snowman :-)
[11:21] Stella Merlin: TLT Dragon is victorious!
[11:21] You: Janice, thanks for coming to our rescue ;)
[11:21] Regent Gazov: Bye, everyone. I need to head out.
[11:21] Stella Merlin: Bye Regent!
[11:22] Savannah Glimmer is Online
[11:22] Stella Merlin: Desi -- would you send us all an SL notecard so we can join your classes sometime?
[11:22] You: OK I think everyone's starting to scatter.
[11:22] learner Bailey: thanks for your time, have to run
[11:22] JohnJAYARflipper Schumann: bye
[11:22] You: I'll post some info on our blog
[11:22] You: And I'll get Lisa to send you all some email with the URL for our blog.
[11:22] Stella Merlin: Thank you very much Desi for joining us and all the useful information!
[11:23] Ariadne Yiyuan: Thank you. I have learned a lot --- very exciting.
[11:23] You: I'll add the info that Desi's given us here
[11:23] Stella Merlin: Thank you, too, Ilene and Joe.
[11:23] Janice Binder: Desideria, what location is your class tomorrow night?
[11:23] You: Desi, thanks!!
[11:23] Joe Cupola: You're welcome Stella.
[11:23] Desideria Stockton: If you make me your friend
[11:23] Desideria Stockton: I will tp you over
[11:23] Janice Binder: I did, thanks!
[11:23] Desideria Stockton: also, here is the location
[11:23] Desideria Stockton: just im me at 9 30 to come over
[11:24] Janice Binder: Janice Binder (RL= Janice Thiel) from St. Petersburg College

[11:24] You: Desi, thanks!!!
[11:24] Janice Binder: Thank you, Desi, I'll try to "see" you tomorrow.
[11:24] Desideria Stockton: take care :-)
[11:25] Stella Merlin: Bye all!
[11:25] You: Bye!
[11:25] Desideria Stockton: Again, if you need help, just im me
